Extensive molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the interactions between proteins and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) can be described in terms of the surface composition of the proteins. PEG molecules accumulate around non-polar residues while avoiding the polar ones. A solvent-accessible-surface-area model of protein adsorption accurately fits a large set of data on the composition of the protein corona of poly(ethylene glycol)- and poly(phosphoester)-coated nanoparticles recently obtained by label-free proteomic mass spectrometry.

Insulin resistance and endogenous digoxin-like factor in obese hypertensive patients with glucose intolerance

Hypertensive obese subjects with glucose intolerance have hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance and intracellular cation imbalance resulting in increased sodium content. The aim of our study was to assess in these patients plasma levels of endogenous digoxin-like factor (EDLF), an inhibitor of the sodium-pump mechanism. We studied 14 hypertensive and 12 normotensive subjects with obesity and glucose intolerance for fasting blood glucose, and plasma insulin, C-peptide and EDLF levels: the two groups were matched for age and BMI and were studied after a 2-week wash-out period from hypotensive drugs. Mobility of Acetylated Histones in Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate–Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis

Abstract We describe an altered mobility for acetylated histone isoforms in sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Isoforms of histones H3 and H4 with a higher acetylation degree have a slightly faster electrophoretic mobility. Since acetylation neutralizes the positive charge of the e-amino group of lysine, without significantly changing the molecular mass of the protein, the acetylation-dependent mobility shift could be explained by the increase of the net negative charge of the SDS–histone complexes. A possible consequence of this differential mobility for the acetylation site determination by protein microsequencing from SDS gels is discussed.

Plasma protein loss during abdominal surgery is a known phenomenon, but its possible pathophysiological relevance has remained unknown. The present study evaluates the effects of albumin substitution on systemic and local hemodynamics and cellular interactions in the mesenteric microcirculation. Rats underwent median laparotomy and exteriorization of an ileal loop for intravital microscopy of the mesenteric microcirculation. Plasma protein concentrations, systemic and local hemodynamics were recorded during the follow up period, with or without albumin substitution. Blood proteins play a fundamental role in determining the response of the organism to the injection of drugs or, more in general, of therapeutic preparations in the blood stream. Some of these proteins are responsible for mediating immune response and coagulation. Further studies on associations between leprosy and genetic markers in human serum.

Seven serum proteins were typed on a sample of 910 individuals from Angola, Africa. The sample consisted of both leprosy patients and healthy controls from the same geographical area. Significant associations with leprosy were found for the Hp and Pi systems. The results are discussed.

Polymorphism of C'3 in German, Bulgarian, Iranian and Angola population

Using agarose gel electrophoresis, C'3 was typed in 4 populations. The gene frequencies of the common allele C'3S in these 4 populations were Germans (0.8071), Bulgarians (0.8149), Iranians (0.7920) and Angola (0.9532). The results are discussed.
